Geologic Information--Applications for Geologic
Maps and Data Bases
Geologic and geophysical data convey wide-ranging information about
Fort Irwin and are needed for solving numerous problems. For example, geologic
data give information on:
- Surface materials we build on
- Surface processes such as floods and their frequency
- Changes in the environment, both natural and caused by humans
- Kinds of rocks at depth
- Locations of young faults and how recently the last earthquakes
took place
- Location and thickness of basin-fill sediment that stores most water
- Suitable locations for waste disposal and waste-water dispersal
CREDITS: Geologic information on these pages for
the most part was collected and interpreted by David Miller, Elizabeth
Schermer, and James Yount. Geophysical information was collected and interpreted
by Richard Blakely and Robert Morin. GIS work is by Johanna Fenton. John Nakata modelled landscapes.
