    EQRELOC - relocated earthquake hypocenters in the offshore Monterey Bay area
    Abstract:
    EQRELOC includes earthquake hypocenters, their locations relocated by the VELEST model (Kissling and others, 1995), and the connecting vector for each pair of old and new locations. The starting data set consists of earthquakes of coda magnitude greater than 1.0 for the offshore Monterey Bay area in the period December 1975 to March 1997. These data were extracted from the Northern California Earthquake Data Center (NCEDC) database. The calculation of new hypocenters is part of an investigation into the characteristics of the San Gregorio fault zone (Ross and others, 1998)

    This is one of a collection of digital files of a geographic information system of spatially referenced data related to the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program "Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Project" <http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/mbms>. The data were collected and analyzed between 1994 and 2000.

Item names ending in '0' (zero) are data for the original points; the remaining items apply to the relocated hypocenters.

These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. The data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display geologic and oceanographic information about the shallower areas of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

    NCEDC data were requested for magnitudes 1 and greater. Magnitude values of less than 1 appear because the search engine uses a different measure of magnitude than the coda magnitude which appears in the data set (S.L. Ross, sross@usgs.gov, oral communication, 2000). The RMS0 values were not retained from the download.

    Chain-node topology present. All of the data are derived using the same methodology and processing.
