both in wells and at the surface within the bo 0undaries of the Central Alaska Province. These data were compiled from previou 0sly published and unpublished sources and were prepared for use in the 2002 U.S 0. Geological Survey petroleum assessment of Central Alaska, Yukon Flats region. 0 Indications of petroleum are described as oil or gas shows in wells, oil or g 0as seeps, or outcrops of oil shale or oil-bearing rock and include confirmed an 0d unconfirmed reports. The scale of the source map limits the spatial resoluti 1on (scale) of the database to 1:2,500,000 or smaller. 0 This database and accompanying text file describe historical and mo 0dern occurrences of petroleum in wells and natural seeps in Central Alaska at a 0 regional (1:2,500,000) scale. This database was developed for the US Geologic 0al Survey's petroleum assessment of Central Alaska. The report is intended to 0provide information on historical and modern indications of petroleum within th 1e Central Alaska Province boundaries. 1 0This report was compiled and digitized from previously published and unpublishe 0d sources. This coverage was compiled in ArcInfo, a commercial Geographic Info 0rmation System produced by ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Red 0lands, California), version 8.2.0. The files are coverage (ArcInfo vector data 0) format. Coverages are stored in uncompressed ARC export format (ArcInfo vers 0ion 8.2.0). ArcInfo export files (files with .e00 extensions) can be converted 0 into ArcInfo coverages in ArcInfo and can be read by some other Geographic Inf 0ormation Systems, such as MapInfo and ESRI's ArcView (limited versions of this 1software are available for free from ESRI's web site: http://www.esri.com). 1 0The primary source of information on seeps and older wells is Miller and others 0 (1959). This information has been solicited and collected from available sou 0rces but may not represent all such occurrences. Updates will be made to the d 1atabase as needed. 1 1 0 Positional accuracy of data varies depending on the source of the 0 information. Points attributed to Miller, et al, (1959) include inherent erro 0rs in accuracy associated with determining locations from third-party sources a 0nd are discussed in the original text. Points from Miller, et al (1951) were d 0igitized from the original paper map at a scale of 1:2,500,000 georeferenced to 0 a state of Alaska coverage with an RMS error of .002 digitizer inches. At this 0 scale, individual points are approximately 1mm in diameter and therefore have 0a positional accuracy of .5mm at 1:2,500,000, or within 1.25 km on the ground. 0 The general positional accuracy of onshore wells was taken from public record 0 survey data maintained by the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and i 0s accurate to within 10 meters on the ground. Locations of offshore wells are 0from survey data maintained by the Minerals Management Service. This survey da 0ta was plotted onto 1:63,360 scale maps in order to determine latitude and long 0itude. This is the largest scale map available for most of Alaska, with the ex 0ception of population centers. These data locations are deemed to be accurate 0 to within 1km on the ground. Locations of all other modern indications of pet 1roleum are taken from references as noted. 1 1 1 No vertical positional data recorded 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Miller, D. J. 1 Payne, T.
